What is Datav8?

Datav8 is an online data logging system. It is designed to be user friendly, simple and low-cost. With Datav8 you can easily set up logging and monitoring of temperatures, humidity, AC current, pressure and a range of other parameters. Once running the logger will take a measurement every two minutes and upload it to the cloud. By creating an account on datav8.com you can view your data, download records, see automatically calculated quick measurements, set alarm levels and manage hardware configurations. Datav8 uses the widely available GSM cellular network to carry your data to our servers.

How does it work?

The Datav8 starter kit contains all the equipment that you need to get started with monitoring. When the kit arrives open up the Datav8 box and fit a full-size SIM card loaded with data from your preferred cellular operator. Plug the power supply in to a 230VAC outlet and the logger will be ready to run. Create an account on datav8.com and navigate to the "loggers" tab. There you can add the logger to your profile using the IMEI number and password provided with the starter kit. As many users as desired can have access to a logger, allowing your whole team access to the data. You can add as many loggers as you want to your profile, enabling you to manage multiple sites from one web interface. The "Logger Setup" tab allows you to name loggers and channels for ease of reference. Should you wish to measure parameters other than temperature you can purchase alternative measurement modules and set them up on this tab too.

Alerts and Alarms

The "Alarm Configuration" tab allows you to set up email notifications should the measured parameter on any channel exceed your set limits. Each channel has an upper and lower threshold. When the measured data falls outside these thresholds an alert is sent to an email list. In order to avoid false triggering the amount of time outside the thresholds can also be set. The email list can contain multiple addresses so that your whole team is notified. An independent monitoring system is available to detect if a logger goes offline, possibly due to power or cellular network outages, or depletion of the cellular data allocation.

Free Mobile Alerts are now available. Datav8 now uses the "ntfy" app to bring alerts to your mobile device at no extra charge. User manuals, available under the "Documents" tab, have been updated updated with instructions.

Automated Measurements

Often it is useful to get a few key metrics from logged data. The "Quick Measure" tab gives these. For each channel the latest value, maximum value, minimum value and average (mean)value are shown for any selected time period, allowing you to assess the health of the monitored system at a glance.

SIM Cards and Data

The logger uses the cellular network to transmit data to our servers. This requires a SIM card to be fitted to the logger. The logger will typically use 50MB or less of data per month. A prepaid data bundle is generally the most economical option, typically costing around R12/month or R79 for a six-month data bundle. Data bundles can be topped up from internet banking or other online platforms without needing to remove the SIM card from the logger. It is advised to record the phone number of the SIM card for this purpose before fitting it to the logger.

Logging Contracts

The starter kit includes the first year of access to our cloud system. Thereafter you will need an annual renewal for the logger to continue sending data. The current price of an annual renewal is R500, without a SIM or data When a logger is added to your Datav8 profile the contract period begins. This allows you to keep loggers in stock without using contract period. Contracts are renewed by purchasing a renewal token from your Datav8 vendor and using the "Usage Contracts" tab to apply the token to the logger of your choice. Usage tokens do not expire and may thus also be kept in stock to apply to whichever logger needs one. You will be reminded by email prior to contract expiry. All recipients of alarms will receive renewal reminders. When a contract is applied to a logger the contract will be added either to the current date or the existing contract end data, whichever is later. This allows you to add a new contract before the existing one has expired without losing contract period. Should a logger not have a valid contract the contract will apply from the date of usage, to give you a full contract period. If a logger does not have a current contract then you will still be able to access the prior data from the logger, however no data will be logged and no alerts will be sent. Should you wish to lapse a contract it is advisable to turn off the monitoring on the logger in order to avoid nuisance emails.
